Challenge

Moneder was looking for a simple, comprehensive and intuitive SMS routing solution to integrate SMS notifications into their mobile application.

They wanted to provide small affiliated merchants with the ability to run loyalty campaigns and notify their customers of key actions on the Moneder platform, such as purchase confirmations, regular balance updates, point expiry alerts and secure password regeneration. This new channel was essential as an alternative means of communication to email, where the readability of the information was not sufficiently high

After evaluating several mobile messaging solutions, they opted for smsmode©.

Solution

The Moneder team integrated SMS sending by implementing the functions of the smsmode© API. The main advantage of this API was its ease of integration. The Moneder teams particularly appreciated the detailed and high-quality documentation of the various requests. The integration was therefore carried out as quickly as possible and under the best possible conditions.

Advantages

Since the incorporation of this channel, the delivery and readability of information has been improved thanks to the high read rate of SMS messages. This new turnkey functionality for local businesses gives them greater visibility, proximity and trust. All these advantages strengthen physical retail outlets, preparing them to compete with large brands, shopping centres and e-commerce, with their well-developed digital channels.

I would like to thank the smsmode© team for their support.
Our contact was able to respond to our questions, problems and needs at every stage of our project. Their availability and responsiveness were essential to the success of the SMS implementation.

GSM characters accepted for sending for SMS

Discover all the characters supported by telecom operators. Character restrictions do not originate from our service, but from the harmonization of the GSM standard to make the SMS or Text Message service universal. Other types of limits may exist, depending on the operator and the equipment used by your recipient.

How many characters for my SMS?

The size of your text, i.e. the number of characters in your message, depends on the encoding method you choose when sending your SMS:

Maximum 160 characters per SMS. If your message exceeds 160 characters, the SMS messages are automatically concatenated (linked together so that the end user receives only one on their device). up to 5 concatenated SMS messages

70 characters maximum, the cost of 1 SMS sent per recipient every 70 characters, and it can handle all Unicode characters, including emoticons.

What's special about "special" characters?

Good practice

Before sending a mass SMS campaign using our API or Customer Area (GUI) solutions, we advise you to always send a test SMS to validate the encoding of your text message and check that the special characters are identical to your initial request.

List of GSM characters and their encoding

Useful information: if you use our online platform, the REST API or a plugin, you can type the accepted characters directly, without using their ISO codes. Only uploads via the HTTP API require ISO codes for certain characters.

What is the GSM standard?

The GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) standard is a standard for mobile telephony, including the sending of SMS (Short Message Service). It is used all over the world to manage the different encodings. Of European origin, this standard has conquered the world with its performance. It was created to manage the multiplicity of mobile devices that can receive calls and SMS. The emergence and disappearance of telephone operators, the arrival of new digital and analogue transmission techniques require compliance with a standard where characters are encoded in GSM-7. This encoding makes communication between several terminals universal.

SMS KPIs

March 08, 2024

Measuring marketing performance is fundamental to understanding the effectiveness of your actions and maximizing your ROI. When it comes to SMS campaigns are no exception, and include specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as the delivery rateon opening rate and the click-through rate (CTR), that need to be known and analyzed. Not only do they enable you to measure the effectiveness of your communications, but also to identify optimization opportunities to ensure that your messages reach the target audience and provoke the desired engagement.

Continue reading "6 SMS KPIs to master"

Integrating variables into SMS messages

Personalize your SMS messages with the SMS mailing option, which lets you integrate variables into your messages for targeted communication with your customers.

SMS in direct mail to make your messages unique

You can personalize each message in the same campaign by integrating the information contained in each of your contacts' files into the SMS, based on the principle of direct mail. This free feature lets you insert variables (4 personalization fields are available on our platform) for more personal communication with your contacts.

Anticipate the number of characters your variable should contain so as not to exceed the 160-character limit for an SMS (otherwise you'll be charged 2 credits).

How to integrate variables in your customer area?

Step 1

Import your contacts

You have 2 choices:

  • Import a new contact database with SMS mailing parameters that will enable you to personalize the message,
  • Check that these parameters are present in the list of recipients already created.

When importing Excel (.xls) or CSV (.csv) files, variable parameters are linked to their type ("last name", "first name", "e-mail", etc.) by selecting the right field for each column imported
(see beginner's guide in the FAQ).

Available variables
$name : integrates your contact's name
$firstname: (without emphasis) includes your contact's first name
$societe : (without emphasis) inserts the contents of the "Company" field for each contact
$email : includes the e-mail address entered in your contact's file
Step 2

Write your message

To send your personalized SMS messages, simply integrate the variable parameters into your message as you type. At the point where you want your custom field to appear, mention the name of the SMS mailing parameter beginning with "$".

Step 3

Send your message

Your message is now personalized; All you have to do is to fill in the other usual campaign settings (immediate or programmed sending, sender, STOP SMS, etc.) and click on the "Send" button.

How SMS contributes to Doctolib's success

The Doctolib success story is a case study. How did the e-health platform manage to achieve the performance we all know about? Partly relying on SMS and its advantages right from the start. Let’s have a look at the 3 ways in which SMS has contributed to the success of France’s first unicorn.

This is an important point. Because, over and above the criteria for choosing a provider, it’s important to make a long-term commitment, and that’s the case with smsmode©.

innovation and service excellence come first

Secure the application and accessibility of information via SMS

Doctolib undeniably disrupted the healthcare sector. What could be more normal today than to make a medical appointment online, 24/7, and to receive a reminder of the appointment a few hours beforehand?
Since its inception, Doctolib made SMS one of the axes for achieving its objectives to improve access to healthcare professionals. Activated at the friction points of one-to-one interactions, it makes the service more efficient, and adds that extra something to the Doctolib workflow that sets it apart: immediacy and accessibility.

First of all, there’s an appointment reminder, which is Doctolib’s most important use. Doctolib sends up to 4 reminders per appointment, either by email or push notification. Some of these reminders can be replaced by SMS for users who do not have a Doctolib account, do not use the mobile application or do not have push notifications activated (which is the case for almost 1 in 2 appointments). These SMS messages make it easier to read the information and, ultimately, help to reduce the number of appointments booked on Doctolib but not kept by up to 60%.

The second contribution of SMS is authentication. An OTP is systematically sent by SMS each time an account is created on the platform. It concerns not only patient account creation, but also on the professional side — even if other verification processes complete this first stage.
This authentication process is well tried and tested, as it has not been modified since its inception a few years ago. It also provides KYC — Know Your Customer — for new users, which is essential for any contact platform.
Voice messaging (with TTS) is the ‘accessibility‘ link in the Doctolib service. It deals with the issues of deliverability of the messages to landlines and accessibility for the visually impaired. What is the aim? To make their product accessible to as many people as possible.

We still need SMS appointment reminders for people who don’t have the application and SMS OTP for new users...

data protection, security and performance, the shock trio

The figurehead of e-health

Another major challenge (and mission) facing Doctolib is to provide a high-performance and secure service that respects personal data. The SMS use must not only comply with the high standards of the healthcare sector, but also help the client to achieve them!

Data security and confidentiality are central to the Doctolib’s strategy. The importance of data protection and processing is a core of our integrity duty (and of the trust relationship we built up with our users). In addition to internal measures (encryption, HDS, audits, ISO/IEC 27001 certification, etc.), Doctolib’s partners are involved in meeting e-health requirements as subcontractors. They must offer a high level of security guarantees and certifications : data hosting exclusively on servers in Europe, RGDP Compliant, etc. And smsmode©  meets all these requirements.

For years, we’ve been working with the Doctolib team on a daily basis to ensure that we’re always ahead of the game when it comes to the legal security obligations.

The data requirement would be nothing without the monitoring of mobile message routing and performance. The Doctolib product team monitors deliverability rates, sending speeds and the availability of the routing service in real time. These KPIs are key to ensuring reliable routing and optimal management of the volumes of mobile messages sent, country by country, at all times. It’s a performance indicator that’s all the more decisive for SMS OTP because the service is based on immediacy. Close collaboration with the smsmode© technical team meant that the API calls for routes, channels and related prioritisation could be managed internally.

make way for the future...

Supporting Doctolib’s deployment and innovations

smsmode© has been supporting Doctolib since the very beginning. We have witnessed its hyper-growth: from a handful of SMS messages in 2013 to today 25 million SMS messages which are sent every month.

Doctolib has certainly grown with smsmode© and smsmode© has grown with Doctolib.

Beyond these figures, the SMS channel is accompanying Doctolib in its expansion, and its international expansion first and foremost. Even if the approach to healthcare is different in each country, the SMS channel plays the same key role in Germany, Italy and France, offering simplicity and convenience to patients who booked an appointment. It is also an important communication channel, to tell patients about the app’s new features...
... or to innovate and foreshadow the healthcare of tomorrow at the launch of the new markets. SMS is now available to healthcare professionals as a means of direct communication with their patients via the Doctolib interface. This new service for sending SMS and emails is available to practitioners in Germany, Italy and soon France, giving them the opportunity to send group communication to all their patients about the updates in their practice (office closures, holidays, etc.) or to send out prevention and vaccination messages to target patient groups (depending on their age, pathology, etc.).

Much more than just creating a close, privileged doctor/patient relationship, these new communication functions are the future face of the Doctolib brand: that of becoming a “health partner”.
The goal is to monitor our health throughout our lives, to become a cornerstone of prevention and... to have our health always at our fingertips (on our smartphone)!

direct and life communication

SMS, an effective tool for HR team communication

Since its creation in 2016, Skello has integrated the SMS channel into its service to provide its customers with information directly. It is implemented in all countries where the solution operates: France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, etc.

Sent to their customers’ employees, these SMS notifications make it possible to:

  • send weekly schedules to each member of staff with a button click,
  • facilitate real-time absence management, with a message sent to the manager in case of an employee’s being late,
  • transmit (initially or when reset) the unique, , confidential and personal OTP code to the Skello mobile application and badge reader.

Digitizing HR exchanges makes life easier for employees and managers alike, by simplifying the repetitive and time-consuming tasks of managing and optimizing complex schedules.

reinvent and simplify schedule management

Instant message between employee and manager

The digitalization of SMS communications also has the great advantage of contributing to the widespread availability of information: for example, having received his or her schedule directly by SMS — whether or not in addition to the mobile app — the employee will always have it with him or her, at hand, even if he or she is mobile or on the move!

But above all, the challenge of SMS communication lies in its immediacy and responsiveness.

Time is of the essence in many sectors. SMS notifications meet this time objective, enabling real-time communications.

For all the sectors in which Skello offers its service (catering in particular),reactivity and proactivity are the key values. This real-time communication also boasts a very high deliverability rate: a real asset in facilitating the manager’s work.

In the range of channels available, SMS proved to be the most relevant for the same reasons, particularly comparing to push notifications, which were considered but not retained due to the problems of deactivation and therefore much lower deliverability.

meeting growth challenges

A technical architecture at the service of product innovation

On the technical side, the Skello stack developed by the in-house tech team comprises, on the front end, a mobile app and a tablet app, and, on the back end a connected application with various microservices. One of these micro-services is dedicated to communications SMS, email and push notifications.

Equipped with 2 input queues (priority messages and non-priority messages), this architecture was designed to meet the needs for functionalities specific to mobile messaging, prioritization of channels and different message types, failover management (on the channel and service provider sides) and... scalability of the hyper-growth platform.

The use of SMS is simple enough in itself. Using an SMS API meets all the needs and challenges of an organization like ours

While Skello doesn’t currently provide feedback on MOs (SMS responses) or DLRs, these features would nonetheless enable actions to be triggered directly on their platform, adding, for example, more conversational features (exchange via mobile messaging between an employee and his manager, etc.).

An innovation that directly echoes the tech & product challenges of the tech team, who are developing the Skello platform towards more and more intelligence based on the digitization and HR processes automation... and on data.

offer a seamless customer experience

Switch from email to SMS

Plug’Heur designed the whole battery loan experience around digital technology. After scanning the qrcode that redirects to a web page with the partner brand and activating the battery release via an OTP, the user is then informed and reassured at each stage of the loan process via SMS.

A combination of informative SMS is sent as end-of-loan alerts (4 hours before, 1 hour before, at time T and based on 12 hours after its expiry) but also, and above all, at the end of the rental period. The whole process is automatically implemented in their back office and connected via API to the smsmode routing service©.

People needed reassurance, particularly when it came time to drop off the battery. SMS proved to be the most effective way of communicating this information.

SMS was not adopted when Plug’Heur was launched. With the initial product, this information was sent by email. However, as emails were not widely read, the Plug’Heur team reviewed its notification strategy and switched to another channel. This is part of a wider effort to remove all the disincentives from user experience. Alongside with the abandonment of the mobile application and the bank guarantee, substituting email gave them a simple and much more considered means of eliminating all points of friction and thus making the loan experience smoother.

Cell phones can do a lot of things...

Plug’Heur’s objective in replacing email with SMS is twofold. On the one hand, SMS is an important means of communication, particularly at the crucial moment of battery return. Plug’Heur used to receive a lot of messages “did the battery return work?". Since the introduction of SMS, customer support requests have simply been r reduced by 83%.

SMS and mobile phones can be used to bring digital into the physical shopping experience and make it an integral part of it.

SMS is also part of the enhanced service experience that Plug’Heur stands offer retailers (with the ultimate aim of increasing sales). According to several studies, 18% of French who run out of mobile phone batteries leave the shop without finishing their purchase, whereas customers who use a phone recharging service can stay 29% longer and spend 40% more than those who don’t use it. This is a real response to the challenges of retention, loyalty, growth and post-Covid re-enchantment of the in-store experience (with shopping centres at the top of the list).

Proof that the use of mobile phones and mobile messaging have an eminent place in the customer journey in the phygital era. It even represents growth potential for retailers, which Plug’Heur is keen to exploit through its solution and new projects. To be continued...
